The wait is finally over for Argentina as the reigning world champions begin their World Cup 2026 defence with a Group J clash against Algeria in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Lionel Scaloni’s side arrive in North America with history in their sights, while Algeria will be hoping to make life difficult for one of the tournament favourites and potentially spring an early surprise.

Argentina Looking To Make More History

Very few nations know what it takes to successfully defend a World Cup. In fact, only Italy and Brazil have managed it before.

Argentina now have the opportunity to join that exclusive club after lifting the trophy in Qatar four years ago.

La Albiceleste have looked every bit the champions during qualification. They topped the South American standings with authority, finishing ahead of fierce rivals Brazil and securing their place at the tournament without any real drama.

One of the standout moments came in Buenos Aires when they dismantled Brazil 4-1 in front of their own supporters. It was a statement performance from a side that continues to combine world-class talent with an incredible winning mentality.

Captain Lionel Messi once again played a leading role, finishing as Argentina’s top scorer during qualifying with eight goals.

Since booking their ticket to the World Cup, Argentina have kept momentum on their side. Victories over Mauritania, Iceland and Puerto Rico extended their winning run to seven matches, producing 21 goals while conceding just once.

That’s the kind of form that will give supporters plenty of confidence heading into their opening fixture.

Algeria Arrive With Quiet Confidence

While Argentina will dominate the headlines, Algeria shouldn’t be underestimated.

The Fennec Foxes are making their first World Cup appearance since 2014 and only the fifth in their history. Their best performance remains that memorable run to the Round of 16 in Brazil, and they’ll be aiming to at least repeat that achievement this summer.

Qualification was impressive.

Algeria finished top of their CAF qualifying group, suffering just one defeat and scoring goals freely throughout the campaign. Only two African nations found the net more often.

There have also been signs of real progress under Vladimir Petkovic. Although a quarter-final exit at the Africa Cup of Nations was disappointing, recent performances suggest this team is moving in the right direction.

A 7-0 demolition of Guatemala was followed by a hard-fought draw against Uruguay before victories over both the Netherlands and Bolivia earlier this month.

Defensively they’ve looked particularly solid, conceding only twice across their last six matches.

That resilience could prove crucial against one of the most dangerous attacking teams in world football.

Previous Meetings

Interestingly, these sides have only met once before.

That game came in a friendly back in 2007 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou, where Argentina edged a thrilling contest 4-3. It was also the match where a young Lionel Messi scored his first ever brace for the national team.

Nearly two decades later, Messi is still at the heart of Argentina’s plans.

Argentina Team News

All eyes will once again be on Messi, who is expected to make his 200th appearance for Argentina.

The Inter Miami star is also set to become the first footballer in history to feature at six different World Cup tournaments after recovering from a recent hamstring issue.

There’s more good news for Scaloni.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been declared fit despite suffering a finger injury before the Europa League final, while Leandro Paredes and Nico Gonzalez are both expected to be available after recent muscle problems.

The main concern comes at left-back, where Nicolas Tagliafico is expected to miss out with a calf injury. Facundo Medina is the favourite to step in.

Algeria Team News

Algeria also have a defensive injury issue to deal with.

Experienced defender Ramy Bensebaini remains a doubt because of an ankle problem, meaning Samir Chergui could be handed a starting role.

Further forward, Marseille striker Amine Gouiri is expected to lead the line after overcoming the shoulder issue that forced him to miss AFCON.

Mohammed Amoura will be one of Argentina’s biggest concerns. The Wolfsburg forward was outstanding during qualification, scoring 10 goals and adding four assists.

Veteran winger Riyad Mahrez remains captain and brings invaluable experience, even if he’s no longer the explosive player we saw during his Manchester City days.

Argentina vs Algeria Prediction

Algeria are much stronger than many casual fans might realise.

They have quality throughout the squad, plenty of pace in attack and arrive with confidence after a strong run of results. This won’t be the straightforward opener some are expecting.

That said, Argentina continue to look incredibly balanced. They’re organised defensively, packed with experience and still possess game-changers capable of producing moments of magic when matches become tight.

I expect Algeria to make this competitive, but Argentina’s quality should eventually tell.

Prediction: Argentina 1-0 Algeria

The world champions may need patience, but their defensive strength and attacking firepower should be enough to secure three points and get their title defence off to a winning start.

Best Bet: Argentina to Win & Under 3.5 Goals
