Millwall vs Derby County Preview

Halloween afternoon at The Den and the visitors arriving in desperate shape — this one has the feel of a fixture Millwall absolutely have to win. Alex Neil’s side have been stuttering badly over the past month or so, and a run of one win in seven league games is the kind of form that turns playoff dreams into mid-table anxiety before you’ve even noticed. Five points off the top eight with winter approaching, the Lions need a performance here, not just a result. Against a Derby outfit as battered and fragile as they currently are, anything less than three points would represent a serious problem.

Derby, meanwhile, are in a genuine relegation battle after what looked like a promising setup under John Eustace last season has completely unravelled. Eight games without a win in the league, sitting 23rd, two points off the bottom — it is grim reading. The Rams kept just one clean sheet in thirteen competitive games this term and have been leaking goals at a rate that would trouble any manager. There is no sugar-coating it: Derby are in crisis, and a trip to The Den on the back of that kind of form is about as unwelcome a fixture as you could draw.

The contrast in circumstances could not be much sharper. Millwall are underperforming relative to expectations, Derby are performing exactly as their injury list and confidence levels would suggest. This is a game where home advantage, superior squad depth and a desperate need for points should all pull in the same direction — and that direction is a Millwall win.

Millwall vs Derby County Form

Millwall’s recent run makes uncomfortable reading for Lions supporters. One win from the last seven Championship games, with three defeats in that stretch, and the form has drained the early-season energy that came with those big home wins over Norwich and Bolton. The loss at Portsmouth last weekend — settled by a late Thomas Waddingham strike — summed up where Millwall are right now: doing enough to be in games but not doing enough to win them. The departure of Femi Azeez to Brighton has clearly left a gap in the final third that the squad is still trying to paper over collectively, and Lyndon Dykes leading the scoring charts with four goals tells you this is not a team drowning in firepower at the moment.

That said, when Millwall have won at home this season they have done so emphatically. A 3-0 against Norwich and a 4-0 against Bolton show there is genuine quality in this group when everything clicks, and the Den crowd can be a real factor when the team gives them something to roar about. The worry is whether this squad can replicate that output against a side that, despite their obvious problems, will set up to make life difficult and absorb pressure.

Derby’s form is simply dire. Five defeats in their last eight league outings, no back-to-back wins all season, joint-lowest scorers in the division with ten goals in twelve games. Patrick Bamford’s equaliser at Bramall Lane last weekend masked another toothless performance from the Rams, and the fact that they are relying on a striker borrowed from elsewhere to bail them out tells its own story. Only one win on their travels, though two draws on the road does suggest Derby will not simply roll over — they are capable of grinding out a result when the pressure is truly on. Whether they can do that while missing half their squad is another question entirely.

Millwall vs Derby County Head to Head

These two clubs know each other well from years of battling around the Championship, and the head-to-head record tends to reflect tightly contested matches. Millwall have historically been difficult to break down at The Den against Derby, and the physical nature of both clubs’ setups tends to produce scrappy, hard-fought affairs rather than open, goal-fest encounters. Recent meetings have generally been low-scoring with neither side consistently dominant, which makes the current gap in form and squad availability all the more relevant — because on paper, the matchups look more one-sided than the historical record might suggest.

One thing worth noting is that Derby have shown a willingness to draw on the road this season, which partly explains their survival in the Championship despite the form collapse. They’ve taken points away from home in two of their six trips. Millwall, though, have not been beaten at home by a side of Derby’s current standing this term — their home defeats have come against stronger opposition. This fixture, given Derby’s current injury crisis, should favour the hosts more than any recent head-to-head record would indicate.

Millwall vs Derby County Lineups

Neil has his own headaches to manage heading into Saturday. Casper De Norre has been absent for eight Championship games with injury and remains a significant miss — he is the kind of player who sets the tempo in midfield and without him the Lions lack that control in the middle of the park. Josh Coburn is also out with a muscular issue, cutting into attacking options, while summer signing Tairyk Arconte from Rodez is sidelined with an ankle problem before he’s had a proper chance to make his mark. The expected lineup still carries quality — Dykes up top, Cundle and Neghli providing creativity, Metcalfe and Mazou-Sacko covering the ground in midfield — but there is a thin look to the squad depth.

Derby’s situation is far worse. Patrick Agyemang, their standout striker, is absent and that is a hammer blow to any hope of an attacking threat. In defence, Charlie Taylor, Matt Clarke, Eiran Cashin and Sondre Langas are all missing, leaving Eustace scrambling to put together a back four from what remains available. Ward, Nyambe and Robinson will likely form that defensive unit and it is a makeshift look at best. When you are already the joint-lowest scorers in the division and then you lose your main striker while your entire first-choice defence is in the treatment room, the task becomes enormously difficult. Millwall’s injury issues are real, but Derby’s are at a completely different level of severity.

Millwall vs Derby County Tactics

Millwall under Alex Neil tend to set up with a solid defensive foundation and look to build from there — they are not a team that throws bodies forward carelessly, and Neil is meticulous about structure. Expect a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 shape with Dykes as the focal point and the wide players asked to press high and create overloads when Millwall have the ball. The full-backs, Crama and Sturge, will be encouraged to get forward given that Derby’s wide areas look vulnerable without their first-choice defensive options. The key for Millwall will be getting the ball wide early, stretching a makeshift Derby back line, and not allowing the game to become a cagey stalemate — which is exactly what Derby will be hoping for.

Derby will almost certainly set up with two banks of four and try to keep it tight, frustrate, and nick something on the counter — possibly through Brewster or Morris finding pockets between Millwall’s lines. Eustace is a disciplined coach and his side, despite their awful form, have shown they can grind out draws. The problem is that their defensive structure is now severely compromised by injury, and Millwall’s attacking players should be able to find space behind a back line that lacks pace and familiarity. If the Lions can get an early goal to force Derby out of their defensive shape, the visitors have neither the firepower nor the physical resources to chase the game effectively.

Millwall vs Derby County Prediction and Betting Tips

This sets up well for Millwall, despite their inconsistent run. The Lions are at home, they need a response after the Portsmouth loss, and they are facing a Derby side that is comprehensively undermanned in almost every area of the pitch. The big home wins against Norwich and Bolton earlier this season show this squad is capable of putting games to bed, and a Derby team with a threadbare defence and the joint-lowest scoring record in the league is not going to paper over those cracks away from home. The Correct Score of 2-0 to Millwall has real appeal — it fits the pattern of this Millwall side keeping things relatively controlled while grinding out a decisive result, and Derby simply lack the personnel to punish the hosts even if Millwall are not at their fluent best.

The visitors will likely set up to frustrate and they may keep it goalless for a spell, but once Millwall find their opening it is hard to see Derby having the quality or confidence to respond. Back Millwall 2-0 in the Correct Score market.
